Something strange is going on in Brooklyn. A giant bread creature is poised to attack the city, aliens are living next door, a bear turns up missing, felt critters are walking & talking, and old people start hooking up on the internets. Maybe there's something funny in the water.

The Pratt Institute's Media Arts Department proudly presents the Traditional Animation thesis films of the graduating class of 2007, as well as selected shorts. Students will be in attendance for a Q&A to talk about their stop motion, 2-D computer animation, and hand-drawn films.

Free and open to the public, May 4th & 5th, 7pm at the Two Boots Pioneer Theater

Spring Break-a-ganza

So spring break is coming up soon (march 18 through the 24 or some such dates), and curious as to what everyone's plans are. I'm
heading out to L.A. for that week, and am wondering if anyone would like to join me. It would help split lodging costs, but that's the only thing...this isn't going to be a school-funded trip or anything, just a personal spring break. So getting there you'll have to foot on your own. I just think it would be good to go out there with at least one or two other friends and explore the area, have fun and visit studios while we're at it. Any takers?

Saturday in G50

Just a re-cap, and because I've been terrible (again) with emails, the meeting in G50 tomorrow at noon will have Alisa playing The Adventures of Mark Twain. Also, we need to put together a schedule of what Key-Frame wants to do for the next year, whether it be stuff that needs places here on campus booked, or finacial stuff for trips (ie. Ottawa), etc., I'll be staying after the movie to start putting that together. Student Activities is putting together a more thourough layout of club activity this year and need detailed information on all club needs. So, if you want to be a part of deciding what Key-Frame needs to do, let me know this weekend! Tanks! Army Tanks!

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FROM STUDENTS

We need to nominate someone for the Pratt Institute Distinguished Teacher Award for 2006.

Every year, there is always a professor from either Architecture or ComD that wins. I think it's time to change that. I proclam that it's time for the Animators to have their say.

We should nominate as a group, that way our vote counts for something, Now you might ask yourself who is eligible for this? well here is it:

NOMINEE CRITERIA AND ELIGIBILITY:
Recipients should have been employed (full-time or part-time) a minimum
of six years (not necessarily consecutively) at Pratt; and demonstrate
the following:

- Subject expertise and the ability to impart this expertise to students
- Current and relevant knowledge of the discipline or profession
- Thorough preparation for class
- Helpful academic and career advisement of students
- Collegiality and cooperation campus-wide, good rapport with students

we should talk about who we want, Does anyone have any ideas?

Then we,

VOTE HERE!

OSWALD? how random.

Disney has traded veteran sportscaster Al Michaels to NBC for Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.
Walt Disney sold Oswald to Universal in 1927, the vacuum that followed was the driving force that lead him to create Mickey Mouse.

"NBC Pulls Rabbit out of Hat to get Al"

CLAY SHUT OUT DIGITAL!

You know me and my obsession with animation blogs, There are some really great interviews with Annie Award Winners, including interviews with Nick Park, Brad Bird, Tom Kenny and filmmakers Dan Lund and Tony West. check that out here:

grownup geeks' guide

ALSO :

During an interview following the ceremony, Brad Bird was asked if he might consider doing a stop-motion film in clay. He laughed heartily and said, "I'll leave it to people who are better at it than I am… I'm really happy that this year people are realizing that every other form of animation is just as vital as CG."

Bird also said that he is currently working on a couple of projects at Pixar, but that neither has been announced yet so he is unable to comment on them. "I really can't talk about it. I love working at Pixar and it's just a great group of people."

When asked if he felt the same way about the newly merged Disney-Pixar animation studio, Bird said, "Yeah! We're all very optimistic about what lies ahead… I'll tell you one thing I'm really excited about though. An animator is in charge of animation at Disney, and I think that's a reason to just cheer to the heavens."

Ottawa Animation at SVA, February 22

I don't know if anybody has become aware of this, but there is an update on the ASIFA-East website.

There will be a screening at the School of Visual Arts of the best of the Ottawa Animation festival. The screening will take place on Wednesday, February 22, at 7:00 PM. I am planning on going to it. If anyone if interested in accompanying me, please feel free to respond.

Check out ASIFA EAST for anything I failed to mention. See you around.

A G50 painting suggestion?

Hey, Nny came over and tipped me off to this scheme to paint G50, and suggested I post this suggestion.

It's the lightboxes and the door that'll be painted, yes? What say we set up constraints (to keep things consistent), and Exquisite Corpse the place? We decide on a limited color scheme of three or so colors, an outline of black (or some dark color), and everyone draws/paints something within that framework. A day can be agreed on for the painting.

It could be like Ottawa Bus Trip, the Return Of.

Hey! How come I don't have a yellow hat?

Curious?
Real Monkeying Around

G-50!

I have snazzy news guys!

As you know, G-50 is seriously depressing. It's so dreary and makes me want to cry (and no one wants to see a sad Nny). I know we've been discussing it for awhile, that we wanted to decorate it and shiznit and make it more 'homelike'.

So Sophomore Jess and I went to Hankie Hank and asked him if we can paint our beloved G50! He said....YES (though he had this expression on his face like, "omfg what am i getting myself into"...but that was because i was rejoicing really loud, running down the hallway, even Bob popped out to see if I was sick in the head or not). So anyway, Hank said all we gotta do is show Fran what color we want (but since Fran, you read this blog...you can help us, or yell at us, or whatever).

I suggest we only paint the door, and the lightbox wood. Lee came up with this good idea, to add lil shelves ontop of the light boxes. Because you know how everything slides off the slippery lightboxes and gets all bitchylike when you're trying to work...

So...yeah.

Suggestions? Colors?

CBS Orders Aardman's Creature Comforts
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
February 3, 2006

CBS has ordered its first animated series in 13 years, Creature Comforts, an American version of the hit British stop-motion animated TV series of the same name, says The Hollywood Reporter.

The project comes from Aardman Animations, the creative force behind the Oscar-nominated feature Wallace & Gromit - The Curse of the Were-Rabbit and box office hit Chicken Run.

In "Comforts," excerpts from real-person interviews are placed in the mouths of a variety of animated animals who end up "discussing" different subjects on the show. CBS has ordered seven half-hour episodes for midseason 2006-07.

Creature Comforts has enjoyed great commercial and critical success in the U.K. since it launched on ITV1 in 2003 as a series of 10-minute segments. The show is based on Nick Park's 1989 Oscar-winning short film of the same name.

Aardman will produce the half-hour stop-motion animated series in Los Angeles and at its Bristol, England, studios.

Big JOHN

John Freakin' Lasseter.

This is a snippet of an article from: Jim Hill Media

"What sort of impact?," you ask. Well, let's start with WDFA. Where it's been reported that Lasseter (I.E. The new chief creative officer of the combined Pixar / Disney operation) and Ed Catmull (I.E. President of this new mega animation operation) met with middle managers in the Sorcerer Mickey building last Wednesday and basically told these folks: "If you don't draw for a living, then you really don't belong in this building."
