Something strange is going on in Brooklyn. A giant bread creature is poised to attack the city, aliens are living next door, a bear turns up missing, felt critters are walking & talking, and old people start hooking up on the internets. Maybe there's something funny in the water.

The Pratt Institute's Media Arts Department proudly presents the Traditional Animation thesis films of the graduating class of 2007, as well as selected shorts. Students will be in attendance for a Q&A to talk about their stop motion, 2-D computer animation, and hand-drawn films.

Playmates-of-the-year, if your turn-ons include GRADUATING ON TIME, I would suggest signing up for FILM 442-01, Major Seminar: Animation, at the Manhattan campus Wednesday mornings. I stress this because it is ONLY OFFERED IN THE FALL, even though this is not clear on the degree audit. If you don't take it this semester, your next chance will be in the Fall of '08. So, that's it. Make sure you get it taken care of.

Maddy is an African-American girl living amid the faded grandeur of New Orleans' French quarter.

The movie will also see a return to the hand-drawn animation process, instead of using computer animation that has become the industry standard.

must be able to work from home (not school's computers, but home ones)
with wacom tablet, in flash 8. this is a film that will be
high-exposure when the time comes, but for now, people who aren't
working on it shouldn't see it.

pay is $8/hour, but since it can be done from home via FTP/email, the
hours are flexible. you'll get amazing experience painting this film:
it's a fairly loose style. you can work as little as 10 hours a week,
as much as 40.

interested artists would have to complete a short ink & paint test to
make sure their style matches that of the film.

do you like to test your frames often?
or do you need instant gratifaction to satisfy your ADD or ADHD?
would you like to be able to multiply your animating/testing locations?
well i do. and thus i made my own custom home/portable-ish downshoot

it took me about an hour and a half, it cost me $0 because i used scraps at the woodshop and i had the clamps
i did it with the clamps because of the lack-of-space factor/i dont like extraneous material factor, and because i can hook the camera up to my computer and using istop motion see what it looks like immediately

mine, however is made specifically for my digital camera which is about the size of the cigarette box, which held there with a rubber band for sturdiness when pressing the shutter button...i put the camera face down in front of it...if i had another digi cam i would show you but you probably get it (the hole is for when the lens comes out of my camera and since there is a large cut out i can move it...duh)

HELP WANTED ~ Looking for someone who can talk like LENNY BRUCE.

I am animating a character based on Lenny Bruce, and I intend to use dialogue. I don't know how to mimic his voice, even though it seems pretty simple. For those of you who don't know, Lenny Bruce was a controversial comedian in the 1960's, who was arrested numerous times for using obscene language in his comedy performances.

If anyone reading this can pull off the voice I am looking for, please respond in the comments section, or contact me (info below).

This is a cartoon I found on YouTube. It was done using a stand-up routine of Lenny Bruce's, with him voicing all the characters. The Sherriff character is what Lenny normally sounded like. You can find some other Lenny Bruce videos on YouTube.

Mostly I need to finish the main set. I'm very flexible but need to get this set done soon so I can start animating those scenes. It's a city block made of foamcore and wood. I need people to help me cut and glue all the building elements together then paint the thing. I'll feed anyone who volnteers and I'll put your name in the credits of course. Fantastic Show. An amazing line up of animated short films. Great crowd too. Apparently, more than half of the audience were animators! Special Guest Bill Plympton seemed a little nervous when he saw the show of hands.

I will posting a write up of the screening on my blog later on. Here are some pics I managed to take.

We all found Prof. Kalika Kharkar at the end of the show. By the way, I really am smiling here.

Animation Block Party 2007!!!

NYC's Animation Block Party is now open for worldwide submissions. There
will be almost $30,000 worth of prizes up for grabs at ABP Summerfest,
including winning filmmaker copies of Adobe After Effects, Boinx I-Stop
Motion, Toon Boom Studio, Autodesk’s Sketchbook, designer bags from
Crumpler, subscriptions from Animation Magazine and big student production
grants.

All genres are welcome to submit, ranging from stop motion to
experimental, ABP loves it all. There are ten award categories, including
original design, computer animation, narrative short, under minute movie,
personal documentary and more. ABP is also offering an opportunity to fund
animators Public Service Announcement films for the entire festival
season.

This year's summer festival will run from July 28-30 all over Brooklyn, NY.

HELP WANTED ~ from Emmett Goodman

I believe some of you have already seen this. It is the short stop-motion film I made this past summer, IVAN'S ACT. The version here has no sound and music. I would like to get some sound to this soon, preferably by the middle of next month. I realize how busy everyone gets, and I personally don't like bossing people around.
BUT....if anybody knows someone who can compose music and do it quickly on a synthesizer or something, I would truly appreciate it if you recommended them for this job. I don't know about paying anyone, but maybe something can be worked out. All I need is 2-3 minutes of music to go along with the film.

I have tried to find existing music to adapt to IVAN, but to no avail. The same goes with sound. I will need to figure out the sound at some point.
In the meantime, I am doing something I should have done months ago, and posting IVAN'S ACT up here.
(By the way, even though the clock says 8 minutes, that's a faulty error, as my film is only 3 minutes long.)

I got an email from Andy London saying that only 3 people have registered for his Spring project development class, which means it will most likely be cancelled unless more people sign up. I took it last semester even though I had already taken the class with a different proffesor. All I can say is that Andy is amazing and even if you've already taken it you should take it again because he'll teach you a whole new approach to telling a story. The class meets Friday mornings. It's FILM-290-02. REGISTER NOW!! You won't regret it. And please spread the word to people who might not check the blog, including non-animation folk.

Regarding The Animation Drop Box

APPARENTLY SOMEBODY TOOK IT IN THEIR HANDS TO ERASE ALMOST ALL OF THE ANIMATION DROP BOX.. with the exclusion of the sound editing class' work and some of Fran's back up stuff for his classes. Who ever decided to do this will certainly recieve a beating for the eager fists of a one miss katie cropper. So I'm crying and will probably drink a liter of vokda by the end of the day to mourn the loss of my thesis project files (yes I know I should have backed them up like mad but I only backed my elements and not my Projects, lesson learned) YAY NEW SEMESTER!! I'm sorry to relay the bad news, greg didn't do it. I've checked it out we don't know who did it. I hope this doesn't cause mass hysteria but I'm just spreading the bad news. the end.

This is a very sad day for me, Joe Barbera one of my biggest influences has died at 95. Try to remember the first time you saw a Tom and Jerry, or a Flintstones, or even a Snorks? You can't pinpoint it, that is the kind of span that Hanna-Barbera covered. We lost William Hanna in 2001 and now the pair is joined again in a better place.

"Where the Wild Things Are" - CG test from 1983

This is a test for a project based on "Where the Wild Things Are", it featured John Lasseter's hand animated characters on 3D computer backgrounds done by MAGI Synthevision. This was an early Disney foray into computers, but they didn't pursue the computer as an artistic tool any further at that time. Pixar (then Lucasfilm) saw the test and did get it; they hired Lasseter.

So Thor let me know that he recently watched a really good version of a re-cut The Thief and the Cobbler, and that got me really digging again for some stuff. I came across some info on an independently produced, fan-re-cut version of the film, complete with some lost golden footage and boards. I had been checking up on this indie version off and on over the years and it was finally finished this August. I've only found where you can download the DVD off of a torrent site (which is a pain, and I'm not too keen on those things) but you can watch the WHOLE THING on youtube. God bless youtube.

Also, I was sent a link the other day on a good little documentary on Richard Willaims done in the 80's. Talks quite a bit too about Thief and the Cobbler and show's the film vault where Williams kept every bit of the film and art up until it was all taken away and sent off to Korea and not preserved at all.

Sorry to bump the invitation below. I found these rules a couple days ago. I Thought they were interesting.

PIXAR RULES

1. No politics

I truly think they mean this. In all the interaction and panels I saw their team conduct, everyone seemed to a have a healthy sense of humor and not once did I detect an unhealthy ego lurking in the background.

2. No studio execs

By this, Andrew stated that Pixar is studio run by artists, in his words "film school without the teachers". There are no layers of middle managers, creative executives or corporate bureaucrats itching to put their thumbprint on every project that comes their way. Just artists striving to make the very best entertainment on planet earth.

I truly believe that most Hollywood misfires are a result of the multi-layered, ego-filled bureaucracy that is Hollywood. Just ask any credit administrator at a major studio and they'll tell you about all the bizarre things people do just to get their name in the credits of a movie … even if they had nothing to do with it. Ego often rules Hollywood, but not Pixar.

3. Director driven studio

Why does this matter? Someone needs to run the show and without studio execs and a host of producers or other actors to please, the director takes the reins. But these aren't just any director. Most of these people are WRITER - Directors. They are visual storytellers who work closely with another writer and/or director to develop and create their movies. Again, this is a team effort with the director(s) taking the lead. And it's amazing what a singular vision can create with a great supporting team.

4. In-house original ideas ONLY

Sorry folks. If you had some idea you wanted to submit to Pixar for their next film…you're out of luck. The only ideas the surface in Emeryville, CA come from the inside and not just from the writers or directors. Everyone, company-wide, is encouraged to submit ideas. And they are actually considered.

Of course upon hearing of these concepts, a film executive once asked Stanton, "What, do you live in fairyland?" to which Stanton proudly exclaimed, "Yes, I live in fairyland."

The Platform International Animation Festival finally has a decent website that went live probably a couple of weeks ago, I'd guess. But it's there! There's lots more info and it seems to promise a lot. But if you have anything submit-able, do it! There's no submission fee! They have a submission deadline of March 1st, so there's still a bit of time for misc stuff, and I quote "rough cuts are accepted if most of the animation is complete." Which I assume they mean that you'll finish the film before the festival, but are submiting an unfinished piece before submission deadline. Thesis kids?
Anyhow, I like my hometown, and it would be hot to see some Pratt work in the show. If anyone's interested in heading out there for it, I'm sure I could swindle somebody's couch for you. Just a little something for the radar.

2D puppet prep and animation

I am looking for some help on a project for a corporate event. It is a parody animation of “Who Could Ask for Anything More” in a puppet cutout style. The project involves prepping the files of one major character and 5 subordinates. The major character will have some basic lip synching as well as the 5 subordinates. There is some very rudimentary animation on the body of the main character and some even more simple animation on the 5 subordinates (all in unison and not separate keyframing). This could be a lot of fun for someone who is looking for some extra work and possibly a piece for the reel not to mention building relationships with Turbulence which may lead to other work. The project is a paying project. The rate will be discussed.

Avatar Character Designers Wanted

So my office has a designer that they farm out some work to, and he is really bad. They want new people to work on some avatars, its not an internship or anything like that, its just freelance gig that pays around $200 per character design. Each character is different but there is a general framework:

In general each charater would need:
* a body and face
* min 4 costumes (meaning sets of clothes)
* a random number of accessories
* and whatever specific things we would ask for

Aardman Animation's first ever CG venture opens this weekend, and so far, the reviews have been mostly positive.

For those of you who have been on Jerry Beck's Cartoon Brew recently, you will know what I am talking about. For those who haven't, go there as soon as you have a moment.

Commenting on an interview with our friend, Pat Smith, and responses to it, Jerry Beck gives a gut-wrenching lesson we should all take into account.

I'd like to hear what everyone else has to say in response, because I am 100% behind Jerry Beck on this one.

Final Cut Pro Editor: We need someone who has had experience editing and knows Final Cut Pro inside and out. Someone who can troubleshoot and knows the inner workings of the program.

Archivist: We need someone who is able to archive footage in After Effects and Photoshop, someone with experience in this field is definitely preferred.

While Little Airplane is, for the most part, full up in the way of animators and the like (for now), they are always looking for new talent. Send resumes, come in for a test (animation or design, or both!) you never know!

Hair High

I've only heard Lee talking about going to see this so I thought I'd ask around if anyone wants to group up and head out that night together. I also suggest pre-ordering tickets. I want that free Plympton drawing but I also want to be able to get in.

NCN Convention 2006

So as some of you know (or if you wondered why I was missing), I was down in Orlando for a week attending the annual National Caricaturist Network convention. This was my first time ever going, and all I can say is that it was some of the most inspirational days this year. There are dozens of animation events and screenings going on this month right here in New York, and I thought I should share them. I don't have a meeting time planned, but I would like to gather a bunch of the club members and friends to see if anyone would like to arrange going to any of these. And in saying, I realize some of these may be a little out of the way for some of you. And for those of you know me, I can be easily beaten down by lost time. However, it sometimes might be worth it.

The Nightmare Before Christmas is returning to theaters October 20th in 3D... with the glasses and all! I'm psyched because I've never seen TNBC in a theater. So who wants to go? Tickets aren't on sale yet, but we can figure out when and where now.

The meeting this afternoon went well! Here is a recap:

- Meet in frount of the lower ARC at 7 p.m. sharp on Wednesday with all of your things packed and ready to go to Ottawa. We will leave without you.

- Passport or birth certificate and valid ID are required to get on the buss and more importantly get into Canada. So don't forget them.

- Rolling luggage is recommended but anything that can hold the follow will do:

toothbrush / toothpaste
Deodorant
towel
2 pairs of comfortable shoes ( one of them being waterproof )
Socks
extra pair of Socks
Umbrella / waterproof jacket
clothing that can be put on in layers.

- Bring a sketchbook

- bring business cards / resume' / dvd reels ( you never know who you are going to meet )

- Small throw blanket and small pillow

- Camera & extra batteries

- Money - ATM card and or credit cards to get canadian money out of their machines

- Snacks for the bus ride ( no nuts, fruit, veggies) all liquids should have caps ( no cans)
