The Nightmare Before Christmas is returning to theaters October 20th in 3D... with the glasses and all! I'm psyched because I've never seen TNBC in a theater. So who wants to go? Tickets aren't on sale yet, but we can figure out when and where now.

In case you missed it

The meeting this afternoon went well! Here is a recap:

- Meet in frount of the lower ARC at 7 p.m. sharp on Wednesday with all of your things packed and ready to go to Ottawa. We will leave without you.

- Passport or birth certificate and valid ID are required to get on the buss and more importantly get into Canada. So don't forget them.

- Rolling luggage is recommended but anything that can hold the follow will do:

toothbrush / toothpaste
Deodorant
towel
2 pairs of comfortable shoes ( one of them being waterproof )
Socks
extra pair of Socks
Umbrella / waterproof jacket
clothing that can be put on in layers.

- Bring a sketchbook

- bring business cards / resume' / dvd reels ( you never know who you are going to meet )

- Small throw blanket and small pillow

- Camera & extra batteries

- Money - ATM card and or credit cards to get canadian money out of their machines

- Snacks for the bus ride ( no nuts, fruit, veggies) all liquids should have caps ( no cans)

Animator Attire

Yes, Animators are a bit quirky, but not in the way we dress. To be honest, as a group animators we dress pretty normal, at least I think so.

One thing that I do find interesting is that if an animator likes an article of clothing, we will wear it constantly. Not that its dirty, we will wash it, we just wear it a lot. Solid blocks of color are popular. A pair of "Chucks" are typical.

Lets talk about eye-wear. Square or oval shaped black rimmed frames. I'll admit it, I'm guilty. But since when did wearing those frames make us so damn artistic, or are we all just pretending to be artistic?

We are definitely not high fashion, and we know that, we want to be comfortable in clothes we will be in for many hours, slaving over the light table or keyboard.

But honestly can we try to match are hoodies with are spongebob sleeping pants?

We're number one!

If you google "pratt animation" are blog comes in at the number 1 and 2 slots. Just thought it was cool.

Oh, and we were also talking last night about the lack of web presence for the department. Tomorrow I'm going to start setting up a blog for the Traditional Animation Department. Now, it will be a very different purpose than the Keyframe blog - don't want to step on any toes. More something that a prospective student could look at to see syllabi, student work, course listings, etc. Any suggestions would be helpful. I will start bugging you all for quicktimes... now.

Pratt News

Hi All,

Well, there was a faculty meeting of the Animation teachers last night, and I thought I'd keep you all updated about what was discussed.

First off, the faculty seems solidly behind seperating the animation from the live action senior show. We're thinking that we could have the show, perhaps at two seperate times, at a theater in Manhattan like Two Boots Pioneer. That would make it easier to get recruiters and industry folks to show up. Also, we thought the format could be a show followed by a panel-type Q7A with the animators.

Also, there will be a contest to create a poster for the Senior Show. The poster will be hung around Pratt and in animator hang-outs. It will also be produced as a postcard that will be sent to studios. We'll need a work-study student for that, I think.

What else? Well, I'm stopping by B&H on the way home today and I'm getting two new DV cameras. One for G-50 and one for D-9. Something with a shut-off for auto-focus. We're going to order a few more, but I've been asking for new cameras for those rooms for three years now and can't wait any more.

Have you all met Naree Song and Andy London? They are new professors this fall and are both cool. Naree was an animator on Little Einsteins and works at her own studio now. She's a whiz with Photoshop, Flash, After Effects, and production methods. Andy runs London Squared productions and is a crack puppet animator with some great ideas about story telling. Naree will be teaching Character I and Animation I, Andy will be teaching Storyboarding.

FOR SALE: Handmade animation table with disk

So here is the deal. My Dad is a woodworker and he is selling handmade animation tables with the disks. These tables are handcrafted and are portable, just set them on any table or flat surface ( they fit perfectly on the white drafting tables in the dorms) . They inculde a spinable insert disk that can rotate. Also, you don't have to worry about the electrical because he makes that built into the table. All you supply is the pegbar and the paper!

The price you ask? Just a small payment of 150 dollars. A steal.

My Father’s Hand: the drawings of Samuel Wray



Mr. Wray ( father of Bill Wray), has done hundreds of drawings, but now suffers from Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, and can no longer hold a pencil. His daughter Amanda has started scanning and posting these drawings regularly. Most of them are simpler than the self portrait shown here, and display a very elegant economy of line.

Big screening

As subscribers to Bill Plympton's Newsletter we received a great email:

The big news is - "Hair High" will be screening in New York City, starting October 18 at the Pioneer Two Boots Theatre. It's part of their "Month of Horror" for October. Bill Plympton will make personal appearances at the theater, and every guest will receive a drawing from Bill. Cast members and other surprise guests (including the "Krazy Kock" mascot) will appear at the premiere.
